Anxious about starting a new job? Here are a few tips to help things go smoothly.

No matter what your age or career path, any time you start a new job, it can be daunting. Let’s be honest – it can be downright nerve-wracking.

Seriously, whether you’re fresh out of college and looking to start a career or you’re perfectly seasoned and needing a change of scenery, taking on a new set of responsibilities takes courage and strength.  Fortunately, there are a few things that you or anyone moving into a new role can do to ensure success.

  1. Get on the same page when it comes to communication with your manager.  It’s important to have a clear process and understanding of how, when, and how often you should be communicating with your manager. Whether in person or via email, communication is a top priority in every workplace and it’s key to avoiding unnecessary issues or misunderstandings.
  2. Get acquainted with your colleagues. Getting to know the people you work with is vital. You spend more time with these folks than with your family – which means they essentially become your “work-family” from 8-5. Feeling comfortable around them can not only help set you up for a better work experience, it also is essential to building comradery and teamwork.
  3. Participate in work events. Myriad workplaces put time and effort into creating fun events for their employees to participate in so that they have the opportunity to get to know their co-workers outside of the office walls. And, when you get to know someone personally, it allows you to understand them better and can even help boost your productivity when you’re working together back in the office. Getting involved is a simple way to hone your networking skills and possibly create friendships that will transcend your time at your current organization.
  4. Maintain an open dialogue about workloads. With a new job, it’s easy to get either overwhelmed or under-worked. Make sure you’re keeping open communication and dialogue with your supervisor to ensure you’re not only getting the amount of work and responsibility you can handle, but also so that you can ensure you are fully oriented and engaged in your new role.

By doing these four simple things when starting a new job, you can feel less stressed and reduce any anxiety you may have about acclimating to a new position and being in a new work environment.
