Meet Justin Gilstrap: SVP of Benefits Underwriting

How long have you worked at QBS and what is your role? I am the SVP of Benefits Underwriting and have been here since August of 2019. My role consists of building Master Plan Programs, underwriting and pricing prospects, and managing the book of business including renewal deliveries. Programs include multiple major medical vendors, dental, vision, life, disability and various other products across the country.

What’s your favorite part of your job? The work and the people. I stumbled into benefits a long time ago and was just intrigued with the amount of changes that occur year over year. My team and colleagues are great at what they do and it is enjoyable to be part of a team that is thriving. Much of my success is due to my team’s work ethic and dedication.

What is one of the biggest challenges you face in your role? Understanding the game of tug of war. We make difficult decisions every day and these decisions impact various areas of the company. We are tasked with growing the organization by helping our sales force obtain new business, but at the same time, our decisions impact not just the individual client, but the overall book of business. Each decision made has a lasting effect, so balancing aggressive growth and long-term stability is absolutely the largest challenge we face in our department.

What makes QBS different/unique from other places you’ve worked? QBS is a much smaller operation than I’m used to. I’ve worked in a few corporate offices before with lines of cubicles going from one end of the building to another. It’s more personable and let’s face it, how many opportunities do you have to hang out with horses and a donkey while conducting a conference call?!

What would you be doing for a career if you weren’t doing this? I’ve always been interested in the consulting side of our industry. I’ve worked with consultants my entire career and have always been interested in how the other side operates behind the scenes.

What’s one interesting fact about you that we may not know? I was born on 9/11 (Patriots Day) and my brother was born on 12/7 (Pearl Harbor). Yikes!

Anything else you’d like to share? (Family, Hobbies, etc.?) I love spending time hanging out with my family. We do a ton of outdoor stuff like hiking and going to the beach or the mountains. I love concerts, sporting events, and any excused to get together with friends. I also enjoy golfing, softball, and soccer — can’t hang up the cleats just yet.
